Bernhard J. Hering, M.D, is Professor and Vice Chair of Translational Medicine in the Department of Surgery, Director of the Schulze Diabetes Institute and Director of Islet Transplantation at the University of Minnesota, where he holds the Jeffrey Dobbs and David Sutherland, MD, PhD Chair in Diabetes Research and the McKnight Presidential Chair in Transplantation Science. Dr. Hering is internationally renowned for his expertise in islet transplantation for the treatment of type 1 diabetes. His research on antigen-specific immune tolerance of transplants has been considered an important breakthrough in transplantation medicine and his studies on porcine islets as a scalable cell source have reinvigorated the field of islet xenotransplantation.A sought-after speaker, he has given more than 300 invited lectures including keynote lectures at national and international conferences. He is the author or co-author of over 350 articles, including publications in Diabetes Care, JAMA, Nature, Nature Communications, Nature Medicine, and the New England Journal of Medicine. Dr. Hering has been a member of steering committees of major research initiatives of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), including the Clinical Islet Transplantation Consortium, Immune Tolerance Network, Nonhuman Primate Transplantation Tolerance Collaborative Study Group, and Immunobiology of Xenotransplantation Collaborative Study Group and has been the Medical Director of the NIH Collaborative Islet Transplant Registry since its inception. Dr. Hering has served as President of the Cell Transplant Society, International Xenotransplantation Association, and International Pancreas and Islet Transplantation Association. In recognition for his contributions to cell transplantation for diabetes, the U.S. News & World Report and Castle Connolly Medical Ltd. named Dr. Hering one of America's Top Doctors, a distinction reserved for the top 1% of physicians across the U.S. for their specialty.
