先后发明新手术方法11个，在大血管疾病、冠心病、房颤外科治疗等多个领域先后填补了中国乃至世界心血管外科领域的空白，其中冠脉外科处于国内领先水平，大血管领域处于国际领先水平。

承担国家自然科学基金项目2项，国际合作项目3项，省部级及其他科研项目40余项；承担教学改革项目5项；指导大学生创新创业训练计划项目2项，其中国家级项目1项，省级项目1项；作为参与单位负责人承担国家“十二·五”、“十三·五”等科技项目9项；领导建设省级研究中心1个，省重点实验室2个。

获国家专利5项，吉林省科技进步一等奖2项，中华医学科技奖二等奖1项，中国医院协会医院科技创新奖二等奖1项，吉林省自然科学学术成果奖2项，吉林大学医疗成果奖16项；国家教学成果奖二等奖1项，吉林省教学成果奖二等奖1项，吉林大学教学成果奖一等奖1项，吉林大学本科“课堂教学质量奖”卓越奖。出版专著1部，发表论文190余篇，其中SCI收录100余篇。

培养博士研究生32人，硕士研究生44人。

Dr. Liu has invented 11 new surgical methods, and has filled the gaps in the field of cardiovascular surgery in China and even the world in many fields such as aortic diseases, coronary heart diseases, and atrial fibrillation. Under his leadership, aortic surgery is at the international leading level and coronary surgery is at the leading level in China.

He has undertaken 2 projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 3 international cooperation projects, and more than 40 provincial and ministerial level and other scientific research projects; undertook 5 teaching reform projects. He has guided 2 innovation and entrepreneurship training projects for college students, including 1 national project and 1 provincial project. As the person in charge of the participating units, he undertook 9 national "12th Five-Year Plan" and "13th Five-Year Plan" science and technology projects. He led the construction of 1 provincial research center and 2 provincial key laboratories.

He has won 5 national patents, 2 first prizes of Jilin Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award, 1 second prize of Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award, 1 second prize of Hospital Science and Technology Innovation Award of Chinese Hospital Association, 2 Natural Science Academic Achievement Awards of Jilin Province, and 16 Medical Achievement Awards of Jilin University. He has awarded the second prize of the National Teaching Achievement Award, the second prize of the Jilin Provincial Teaching Achievement Award,  the first prize of the Teaching Achievement Award of Jilin University, and the Excellence Award of the Undergraduate "Classroom Teaching Quality Award" of Jilin University. He has published 1 monograph and more than 190 papers, of which more than 100 are indexed in SCI.

He has trained 32 doctoral students and 44 master students.
